Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob
The key fob is an easy method to lock and unlock your vehicle from an extended distance. It also allows you to activate the panic button on your car, which can scare off burglaries.
If your device ceases to function the device can be repaired by following a few simple steps. First, make sure the battery is brand new. Then, try taking it from the ignition by pressing the lock button three times quickly.
Battery
Changing the battery in your key fob is one the most straightforward fixes. The fob has a small coin-shaped battery (CR2032 or CR2025) and can be found in a variety of general stores, home improvement stores, and auto parts stores. Make sure to use an original battery -older batteries are typically no longer good for anything and can damage the circuit board.
You'll need to start by prying the fob open. You may have to employ a flat screwdriver in order to split the two halves. Install the screwdriver into the seams on both sides of the fob, and lift the clips that secure it. These are easily broken so be cautious and take your time.
Reassemble mini car key battery after replacing the battery and test to see if it does what it is supposed to. If it still doesn't work try pressing the button a few times and ensuring whether the contacts are clean. You can also try it using an additional key fob to determine whether the issue is limited to a specific key. If not it could be another reason why the key fob isn't working. For example, it could be that the button is worn out. This would make the button work infrequently and not all the time.
Interference
The key fob utilizes tiny transmitters to transmit an audio signal that is short-range to a device in your vehicle. Its function is to allow your vehicle to recognize the key fob, unlock its doors when you are near it, and then start when you press the ignition button.
The problem is, interference can sometimes hinder the communication. If you charge your second-generation Apple Pencil while holding the fob (via iGeneration) it may prevent you from unlocking the vehicle.
Other electronic devices that utilize the same frequency as the fob can also interfere with its signal. Garage door openers or tire pressure monitoring devices can be affected. It is also possible that an RF transmitter in your home might be interfering with the fob's signal, however, this is difficult to diagnose without an expert test.
It's also possible that the key fob needs to be reprogrammed. The transmitter on your key fob must be recognized by the Mini's receiver. A unique code is then generated for each pairing. Fobs have to be reprogrammed after they have been disconnected or replaced, if you purchase a replacement and, in some instances, when the battery is changed. Follow the instructions in the owner's manual to reprogram a key fob or ask a dealer for help.
Chips that aren't working
Modern electronic key fobs provide more convenience and function than manual keys. However they are also more susceptible to damage. One of the most common issues is a defective chip that prevents your device from functioning properly. This is usually a simple fix.
If your fob keeps not turning on your car, this could be a sign that the chip has become malfunctioning. The issue can usually be fixed by replacing the battery which is affordable and easy to find at an hardware store or big-box retailer. To avoid problems in the future ensure that you purchase the right battery with your car model.
The fob should also not be exposed to water, or soapy residue. Water can cause corrosion and interfere with the circuitry. If this is the case you'll have to clean the board with isopropyl or an electronic cleaner prior to installing a new battery.
It is a good idea to test the functioning of the fob before driving the vehicle. Verify the voltage of the new battery with an voltmeter and make sure it is secure. Often, the mini key fob can malfunction or cease to function completely. First, check that the battery in your key fob is in good condition and hasn't been replaced. Once a new battery is installed, it is not able to be reprogrammed and would require a replacement.
Once the key fob has been programmed it will then be able to communicate with the car and control its functions, including the radio, air conditioning and even the windows and sunroof. You can also enable the comfort access feature that means that the door for the driver will open and close automatically when you enter the vehicle or the seats slide up and down to allow you in and out. The key fob will then adjust the mirrors, radio and climate control settings to suit your preference.
